MOCA Versus Yves Klein Butoh

I was fortunate enough to be invited to vlog a Butoh Protest Performance at the MOCA Art in the Streets opening last Saturday. Jeffrey Deitch and friends at MOCA decided to whitewash an anti-war mural painted on the Geffen Contemporary by Italian artist Blu causing a huge controversy. The Butoh performers were protesting that act of censorship. Their performance was fantastic. Check it out!

Oh Yeah...

I forgot about this blog for awhile. It was previously the "LA Art Network" blog which I extracted from the original Tribe.net group that I moderate. But, I decided I'd rather not be that formal so I'm turning this blog into one that's just generally focused on what I'm doing art-wise. Much more fun for me.

So, what am I doing these days? Well, I'm working on a few music videos for songs that I recently wrote. I'm in this band called Technostress and we're releasing our EP digitally in September. We needed something to promote it so I thought I'd take a stab at putting something together. I'm making some costumes for it that are coming out pretty well. See a headdress for one of them below.

I will have a new painting in this year's Tarfest, http://www.tarfest.com, which is a great film, art, & music festival held every year in the Wilshire district in Los Angeles. If you haven't gone previous years, definitely check it out this time. It's well worth it.

LACE in Hollywood

Wednesday I volunteered at this great gallery in Hollywood called Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. It's right in the middle of all those wig shops & lingerie stores. It's been there 11 years, I think. They had a great opening for two artists, Dustin Shuler & Alexander Apostol.

Dustin's piece was this massive "vivarium" environment that mimiced condidtions in a rain forest. The piece was filled with live animals like tree frogs, lizards, turtles, and a few birds. The whole thing was miked. You gotta go down & see it. In the other part of the gallery was some digitally altered photographs of buildings in Caracas, Venezuela done by Apostol. There were also a few of his video art pieces playing. Good stuff. I'll be down there tonight (Friday) again. C'mon down.
